Hong Kong universities now offer a range of interdisciplinary undergraduate options. They differ in structure, selectivity, and how much freedom students have to shape their studies. Understanding these differences helps students decide whether any of them is a better fit than a traditional major.
The University of Hong Kong
The University of Hong Kong launched the School of Innovation, whose flagship Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Technology is project-based and draws on architecture, business, engineering, and science. HKU has also created dual-degree options that combine arts and engineering, as well as new schools focused on computing and data science and biomedical engineering.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
The Chinese University of Hong Kong created the Zhizhen School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, which offers an eight-year Bachelor-to-PhD pathway under the leadership of Professor Yau Shing-tung. CUHK has also introduced new programs that cross faculties, including Public Humanities and Materials Science and Engineering.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology offers an Individualized Interdisciplinary Major through its Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies—the first of its kind in Greater China. Students can also pair a traditional major with an extended focus through the “Major + X” framework in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital media, or sustainability. HKUST has additionally established a Division of Arts and Machine Creativity.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University introduced a Bachelor’s Degree Scheme in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2025/26. High-achieving students explore courses across faculties in the first year before designing their own combination, supported by a personal academic mentor. The final degree title reflects the student’s chosen specialization.
City University of Hong Kong
City University of Hong Kong has emphasized interdisciplinary research and, more recently, joint pathways. It ranked 11th globally (and first in Hong Kong) in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026. CityU also offers joint bachelor’s programs with Columbia University in which students spend two years at each institution and graduate with degrees from both. These cover fields such as computing, finance, engineering, and selected social science areas.
Hong Kong Baptist University
Hong Kong Baptist University has offered undergraduate transdisciplinary programs for several years through its Division of Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Programs. Current options include Arts and Technology, Innovation in Health and Social Well-Being, Digital Futures and Humanities, Global Entertainment, and an Individualized Major. Students take a shared core on global challenges and work across faculties. The Individualized Major is intended for students whose interests do not fit existing combinations.
