Why Are So Many Kids Switching Schools? And What Really Makes a School “Good”?

As parents in Hong Kong, we’ve all heard the stories — or perhaps even lived them. One day your child is settled in school, the next they’re asking to transfer. Sometimes it’s because they don’t click with their classmates. Sometimes a teacher relationship has gone sour. Other times, their grades are strong and the dream of a “better” school starts calling. And for some families, the hope is that a fresh start will magically turn poor results around.

Then there are those who switch simply because “everyone else is doing it.

I’ve spoken with hundreds of parents over the years, and the same question keeps coming up: What actually makes a school a good school for my child? Is it easier university admission? Impressive IB scores? Switching from the local DSE system to an international curriculum?

The truth is, it’s rarely just about any of those things.

Children do their best learning when they feel safe, familiar, and emotionally settled. That sense of security and belonging allows them to focus, make friends, and grow with confidence. Changing schools might seem like a quick fix, but it often means starting all over again — new faces, new routines, new expectations. It’s tiring for everyone, and more importantly, it doesn’t automatically solve deeper issues like study habits, motivation, or resilience.

We all want our children to learn how to face challenges instead of running from them. Adaptability and perseverance are life skills that will matter far more in the long run than which school name appears on their transcript.

Of course, there are times when transferring really is the right decision. But moving just because a school is famous or highly regarded doesn’t guarantee happiness or success. What matters most is finding the right fit — an environment and learning pathway that truly suits your child’s personality, strengths, learning style, and future dreams.

At our education centre, we don’t just offer tutoring. We take the time to sit with families, listen carefully, and help you think through the big questions: Is switching schools really necessary? Would staying and getting the right support be better? How do DSE and IB actually compare for your child? What subjects and route will play to their strengths?

We never push parents to chase “name schools” for the sake of it. Our only priority is helping you find the path that gives your child the greatest chance of being happy, confident, and successful in the long term.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by school choices, worried about whether to transfer, or simply want a calm, honest second opinion on your child’s education journey, we’re here for you.

Come and have a chat — no pressure, just genuine support. You really don’t have to figure this out on your own.💛
